Spurs took the lead when Townsend's cross was missed by Soldado and Lewis Holtby and went past keeper Brad Guzan.
Only two smart saves by Guzan from the lively Townsend and Paulinho stopped Spurs doubling their lead.
Substitute Christian Benteke's arrival gave Villa fresh impetus but Spurs scored again when Soldado fired in after a slick passing move.
