Fernando Torres got Chelsea’s stuttering Champions League campaign
back on track as the striker fired Jose Mourinho’s side to victory over
Schalke.
The Spaniard scored twice in the 3-0 win to lift the Blues to the top
of Group E and ease the pressure on the London side following last
month’s home defeat to Basel.
And only the woodwork denied Torres a memorable hat-trick as his
header from Frank Lampard’s free-kick cannoned off the bar to safety.
Eden Hazard added a third late on as Chelsea punished Schalke’s kamikaze attacking with a deft counter attack.
Chelsea boss Mourinho made five changes to the side that beat Cardiff
City in the Premier League on Saturday, with David Luiz, whose mistake
led to the Bluebirds taking the lead at Stamford Bridge, being axed from
the starting line-up.
